I Have Every Reason To Smile

There is one park nearby that stays open even if it is snowy. It has a big hill and children gather from miles around to sled. One snowy day, after finding the gates of my other parks closed, I was so pleased to find this one open. The hill was busy with sledders but the park was pristine, white and still but for the glistening.

I had seen several posts on social media of people pushing their faces in the snow to create fascinating mirror images of themselves. Walking past a bench covered in a perfect, thick layer, I couldn’t resist. I looked left and right, making sure I was alone, bent down and pushed my face into the soft, refreshing snow. It really felt delightful! The image was strikingly clear. I snapped a photo and walked on. Later, I looked at the awful portrait. Gee, why so serious, Jen? Here I was in a winter wonderland, doing something silly and fun, and my face looked like a death mask. A death mask in a knit hat.

Once in high school, a teacher passed me in the hall and said, “You wouldn’t want to die with that look on your face.” I don’t want to live with that look on my face either! Please Lord, don’t let me die before I learn to live fully and graciously in You. Knowing that my Savior is in my midst and in my heart eternally, I have every reason to smile!

A merry heart does good like medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones.  Proverbs 17:22
